Mountain Bike Race at Cuilapam

There was a mountain bike race held on Sunday, 20 October 2013 in Cuilapam de Guerrero, a village just 11 kilometers southwest of Oaxaca city. Unlike the other races listed here, this one was not league sponsored but was organized by the people of Cuilapam as part of a weekend fiesta. The race course ran alongside (and frequently crossed) the river and then ventured into nearby countryside. The route was unusually flat and had no technical aspects to speak of; however, the frequent water crossings certainly added some challenge to the enterprise. The race circuit covered 4.5 miles (7.2 km) and had an elevation gain & loss of just 243 feet (74 meters).

Changes to 2013 Mountain Bike Race Schedule

Heavy rains in recent weeks (September 2013) have necessitated some changes in the schedule of mountain bike races around Oaxaca. The dates of some races have been changed, the marathon race from Rancho el Jabalin to Huatulco has been cancelled, and some new races have been added to the calendar. Here is a list of of the final events of the season.

22 Sep – Cross Country Race  /  Tlalixtac  –  Moved from 29 Sep to 22 Sep

24 Nov – Cross Country Marathon  /  Oaxaca to Santa Catarina Ixtepeji  –  Moved to new date

Mountain Bike Race At La Cumbre Ixtepeji

The World Wildlife Fund manages an extensive forest preserve in the mountains just north of Oaxaca city, which includes miles of old logging roads and a ecotourism camp. The camp is the site of this race. The course uses some of these logging roads, but the exciting part is the singletrack “La Cabeza de Vaca” trail that squiggles through the forest on a narrow, loose tread – alternately climbing and then dropping among the trees. The circuit covers 4.8 miles (7.72 km), making it the longest of the race venues. The elevation gain and loss going around the loop amounts to 1153 feet (351 meters). There are few technical challenges on the course, but the singletrack is very narrow, the ground is quite loose and the deep covering of pine needles can be very slippery – so riders need to be alert! The last part of the race loop is a screamer downhill on the main access road leading back to the camp.

2015 Oaxaca Race Calendar

Here are the proposed dates and venues for mountain bike races in and around Oaxaca in 2015.

Be advised that race dates and locations are sometimes changed in the course of the season, so be sure to check the accuracy of this calendar before heading off to the race venue. The list below was updated on 11 March 2015. 

Participants should pre-register for all races. There is generally no last-minute signing up permitted on the day of the race. Races begin on time at 9:00 am (yes! they really do!) unless otherwise stated.

CROSS COUNTRY RACES               

January 25 – San Pablo Huixtepec    Race begins at 10:30 am

February 15 – San Pablo Etla, Oaxaca

March 15 – Titan Zapoteca cross country marathon race at San Pablo Guila    Race begins at 10:30 am

March 22 – San Jose de Gracia

April 12 – Huayapam

May 3 – Cruz Blanca, Xoxocotlan

May 31 – Yanhuitlan

June 28 – Tule

July 19 – Rancho Blanco, Matatlan

August 9 – Lachigolo

September 6 – Rancho Oasis

October 25 – Cerro Fortin, Oaxaca

 

DOWNHILL RACES

Dates for downhill races in 2015 have not yet been announced, as of late January.   Proposed locations for downhill races are:  Cerro Fortin, Monte Alban, Ixtepeji and San Pablo Etla.

 

MARATHON RACES

Dates for marathon mountain bike races in 2015 have not yet been announced, as of late January.  Marathon races are usually held in October and November. Proposed marathon races will take place at San Cristobal, Ixtepeji and Ixtlan de Juarez.
