Groups

There are quite a few mountain biking groups or clubs in Oaxaca.

The following list is neither complete nor exhaustive, so if you are interested in any particular group or club you will probably have to ask around to get more detailed information. But at least you will know there are other like-minded cyclists around and will have an idea about how to contact them.

Club El Camino

https://www.facebook.com/groups/clubelcamino/

This is a Christian cycling club.  It’s a friendly group and anybody is welcome at all fitness and bike skill levels. Each rider should have a sturdy bike in good condition, wear a helmet and gloves and carry water and a tire patch kit. The rides are not for experts, but the terrain can be a little challenging to learn new bike riding skills and improve physical condition.

The group has three levels, so you can choose which one suits you best:

Level 1: Recreation

Level 2: Training

Level 3: High Performance/Competitive (by personal invitation only, as certain requirements need to be met)

The routes and meeting place for levels 1 and 2 are published on Facebook on Fridays for the 7am Sunday ride. Level 3 rides are by personal invitation only.

Nitos Ciclistas En Movimiento is an informal mountain bike club in Oaxaca de Juárez, the capital city of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The group was organized in 2012 and sponsors weekly Sunday rides, which start about 8 am from the plaza in front of Santo Domingo on the Macedonia Alcala.  The outings generally attract between 15 and 40 riders, of whom approximately 40% are women and 60% men. The rides move at a leisurely pace, but can be rather demanding because of their distance, elevation gain and duration. The club is composed mainly of people in their 20’s and 30’s, though there are some riders in their teens and others pushing 70. The club welcomes newcomers and members are very friendly and accommodating.

The club’s rides have gone to many destinations around the Central Valley of Oaxaca and in the nearby mountains, including Tlacolula, Guacamayas, Santa Ines de Monte, San Cristobal, Jalapa del Valle, Santo Domingo Tomaltepec, Tlalixtac, Cuilapam and Zaachila. The destination of the next Sunday’s outing is usually announced on the club’s Facebook page on the Saturday preceding the event.

Participants in the weekly ride should have good stamina and basic bike handling skills. Each rider should have a sturdy bike in good condition, wear a helmet and gloves, and carry plenty of water, some energy food and a tire patch kit.  The group typically stops for lunch at some point on the day’s ride, so bring sufficient money, as well.

Oaxacletos

https://www.facebook.com/groups/152122101521360/?ref=br_tf

Members publish their intended route on facebook, which can mean there may be a few different routes on the same day with differing levels of technique and time. This means that members can choose the route they prefer.

The routes are for intermediate and advanced riders and the pace is quite fast.

Meeting time is 7:45 am on Sundays, in front of the Chapel de Belem de Guadalupe located at the north end of Llano Park in the central district.

Anybody is welcome to join the group, but to be an active member and accepted on the Facebook page, you must ride with the group at least once.

Other Groups…..

As we become aware of other groups (e.g. you write us and tell us about your group, hint hint), we initially post them on the Links page. As we gather more information about the group, we’ll add it here on the Groups page with the details/information we know. I.e. check both pages for groups to ride with.
